April 2008 Public meeting held In connection with the start of the project competition for the New Central Urban Waterfront and MEDIASPACE a public meeting was held at Aarhus town hall on April 22nd 2008. The project will have great influence on the everyday life of many citizens of Aarhus, and it is important to the City of Aarhus that citizens are involved in and informed about the progress of the project. For that reason we invited citizens and the press to a public meeting, where they were updated on the visions of the project and got the opportunity to see and meet the competing teams. During the evening there were speeches by alderman of the Technical and Environmental Administration Peter Thyssen, alderman of the Culture and Citizen’s Services Administration Flemming Knudsen, city architect Gøsta Knudsen, city librarian and Director of Citizens' Services and Libraries Rolf Hapel and the six competing teams presented themselves for the citizens of Aarhus. See the slide show of Rolf Hapel here... (PDF)

Deadline for applications for the prequalification has passed The deadline for applications for participation in the upcoming design competition has now passed. An interesting task of choosing the 5-6 most suited candidates for building Århus’ new main library now awaits. As we have received 40 interesting applications, a hard selection process lies ahead. The competition is planned to commence in March and the winner will be chosen in January 2009.

October and November 2007
Competition program October and November have been some busy months. A big project as MEDIASPACE has many partners, who are contributing and have to be involved in formulating the competition program. The big variety of functions and rooms of MEDIASPACE demand a wide spectre of experts reading and correcting. This is a long and demanding process, which secures continued optimization of the material. The first draft of the competition program has been revised and the many qualifications must now be implemented, where after a new draft will be worked out and send to our partners. www.multimediehuset.dk in English Many people follow the MEDIASPACE project closely also people from abroad, and more and more are doing so as time goes by. It is therefore necessary to inform foreign interested parties about the project. The English version of the homepage will be launched in the course of December. Text and graphic elements are more or less ready, so the main task is now the development and design phase.
Updated and new folders, describing the various aspects of MEDIASPACE are being prepared and translated.
September 2007
Project Competition The project competition is the order of the day in September and the upcoming autumn. The many inputs generated by citizen involvement, employee workshops, and interdisciplinary workgroups are now being structured and shaped into a comprehensive and visionary competition program. In this manner, September becomes a month where writing the competition program, formulating demands for the building activity and its actors, and planning the tender process will take place. Furthermore, we will continue working on optimising and making concrete the visions which exist for the content of the building, the city space, and the surrounding facilities. ‘Experimentarium’ - exhibition and film opening During September we will exhibit the work of the children who participated in the Experimentarium, which took place in July at Aarhus Main Library. The Experimentarium was a workshop where children had the opportunity to convert their visions and imagination into spaciousness, dimensions, interior design, qualifications, furniture, plants and lighting in the future main library of Aarhus; MEDIASPACE. The film which was recorded of the children working will open at the same time as the exhibition. The exhibition of the children’s work and the opening of the film will take place on September 11th at 4.30 pm at Aarhus Main Library.
July 2007 ‘The Experimentarium – workshop for children’s ideas” will be taking place in week 27. It will be a week of citizen involvement for the youngest citizens. Through workshops involving different materials, printing and images, the children will develop their visions for the future main library of Aarhus; MEDIASPACE.
June 2007 An information campaign regarding the MEDIASPACE project will be taking place in June in Aarhus. A telephone based interview survey involving the citizens of the City of Aarhus will be carried out in week 24. The new website of MEDIASPACE will be launched in week 26. There everyone will have the opportunity to follow the process, contribute with their own ideas for activities in MEDIASPACE, watch images and video clipsand much more. Furthermore the citizens will be able to upload their own photos to the homepage through Flickr. We are working intensely on formulating the basis of the upcoming tender material for the project competition this autumn – both in terms of content and technical specifications for the area. Steps are taken in order to report on the considerable intermunicipal work that must be done in order to clear up the circumstances on the future bastion, including the future solution to the traffic conditions.
May 2007 Developing and putting together all the activities, possibilities and experiences of MEDIASPACE can be regarded as a large jigsaw puzzle – and we have started developing the pieces! For 6 weeks from March to May 2007, a large number of employees from Citizens’ Services and Libraries have worked on developing ideas and recommendations for some of the many pieces of MEDIASPACE jigsaw puzzle. Seven groups have worked on creating visionary ideas and providing the raw material for activities, visions and functions. - And we have not finished yet. The MEDIASPACE process is going to be a long line of different processes which are to form new pieces of the jigsaw puzzle. The process was split into 7 themes:
4 user groups: Learning and knowledge Meeting place, community and democracy Experiences Children and families 3 interdisciplinary user coordination groups: IT and Technology User interaction with the house and its activities Space management, media and logistics The results of the process will form the background partly for the specifications of the project competition, which is expected to begin in the autumn of 2007, and partly for the further work on the concretisation of the future service content in MEDIASPACE. Parallel to the work on the content of MEDIASPACE, an ongoing intermunicipal explanation process concerning different circumstances of the bastion, including the future solution of traffic conditions, has taken place. The process ended on May 15th 2007 with an in-house theme day. The “raw material” will now be examined by the director’s team of Citizens’ Services and Libraries in cooperation with the building consultant on the project.
