Development projects

We are constantly working on and considering which functions and experiences MEDIASPACE shall contain for the benefit of the users.

MEDIASPACE shall be an open learning centre and the library of the future as well as a centre of experiences for children and adults. In order to accomplish these demands a number of projects have explored and developed original and inventive initiatives.

You can read about the latest development projects below.

CCC

Circle Computer Club

The aim of this project is to familiarise children and young people with new technology through structured educational courses. The project furthermore focuses on developing the social skills of children and young people by initiating teamwork across local communities.

The Experimentarium – workshop for children’s ideas
The Experimentarium – workshop for children’s ideas was citizen involvement for the youngest citizens. Through workshops involving different materials, printing and images, the children developed their visions for the future main library of Aarhus; MEDIASPACE.
MEDIASPACE is going be a special place for children, which appeals to playing, experiencing and learning. Therefore children were invited to participate in the development of ideas for MEDIASPACE. The aim was to gather the children’s ideas about contents, interior design and competences. The ideas were the most important, not the form. The creative methods were used to develop and express the ideas, not to develop the artistic skills of the children.

Hybrid Learning Environments

During 2004-2005 Aarhus Public Libraries experimented with various forms of ‘learning rooms’ in the library. The goal was to create relevant offers of learning which supported the individual’s need for lifelong learning. This project was entitled Hybrid Learning Environments.

Info Galleries

Users of all Aarhus Public Libraries may run into info galleries which are shown on large screens that users may interact with and gather inspiration from. The screens hereby make the opportunities and resources of the library visible and if the user discovers something interesting which he or she would like to continue to work with, the user may send it to his or her e-mail.

InfoIsland.dk

Info Island DK is a virtual house of communication located in the three-dimensional online world Second Life. The house is open to everyone who is interested and is completely free to visit and use. Info Island DK is driven by six Danish public libraries.

Bookworms and Dog-ears

This project aims to focus on the libraries’ presentation of literature in cooperation with literary actors in Aarhus. The project aspires to contribute to an expanded coverage of the literature which hardly catches the attention of the media, e.g. exile-literature. Users will be involved in new ways, e.g. in connection with book clubs and workshops in writing.

MEeting YOUth

The project aspires to promote young people’s access to society and to Europe by developing different tools of implication in cooperation with European youths. These creative tools are meant to contribute to the youngsters’ interest in developmental work and social debates because it takes place on their own terms and takes account of young people’s lives and interests.

The Interactive Children’s Library

This project is an unorthodox and cross-disciplinary cooperation between many partners and five public libraries. Using children’s needs, their culture and cultural experiences as a starting point, the project offered many exciting ideas on the children’s library of the future.

Transformation Lab

The aim of the Transformation Lab was to continuously develop a model room which functioned as a flexible physical frame for changeable, interactive projects. Together these projects explored opportunities for new ways of communicating in the physical library and communication of the physical and digital media in new forms.

Unleash the Users

This project seeks to explore the creative and innovative potential of the citizens by means of a kind of extreme methods of user involvement. The method will become a central device in the development of MEDIASPACE. A handbook in user-driven innovation will ensure that the experiences can be used by other public libraries in Denmark.

YOUng

Project YOUng is an untraditional cooperation where young people, youth partners and the Main Library together aspire to create an entirely new youth library. This venue for learning, being and working must operate in the area between school and leisure time and create an exciting youth environment. In this environment an extensive concept of learning provides an opportunity to create activities which provide the young people with many and various skills on equally many areas - skills which are relevant for the professional as well as the personal development.
